Before we look at captures and trades, let’s go over the point system used to measure the value of chess pieces. This system is based on the pawn, which is given a value of 1. Every other piece is measured in comparison to it. Here’s a table that shows how much is each chess piece worth:

- Giving up a knight and a pawn (3 + 1 = 4) to capture a rook (5) leaves you with a one-point gain. That’s a favourable exchange.
This system isn’t perfect, but it’s a useful tool. You’ll still need to think about your position and plans — not every trade that looks good in points is good on the board.

Material vs positional value of chess pieces
The point values we discussed show the material value of each piece, but chess is not just about points. The positional value of a piece can be even more important, depending on how it is placed and how well it works with your other pieces. Besides, there are a lot of cases when players have lost games even with a big material advantage.

You can see that White has a material advantage because of the knight. However, the current position of White’s pieces completely negates this material advantage. The knight not only doesn’t have any available moves due to the pawns, but also completely blocks the rook. So technically, White is playing with just the king against Black’s rook and king. If Black understands how to checkmate a lone king, then White loses the game.
To assess the true value of a piece during a game, always consider the 3 main things:
- Activity – can the piece move freely and influence the board?
- Coordination – does it work well with your other pieces?
- Space – does it control important squares?
So, before making any exchange, ask yourself:
- Does this trade leave me with active pieces?
- Will it improve my opponent’s position?
After having answers to these questions and considerations, you will be able to make better and smarter decisions.
How chess engine evaluations relate to chess piece values
We thought that this might be an interesting section to cover, as you probably wondered why engines sometimes put values that don’t seem logical in the first place, or make quite strange moves. Modern chess engines, like Stockfish or AlphaZero, use a system called centipawns to measure the value of a position. A centipawn is one hundredth of a pawn, meaning that a score of +100 means a one-pawn advantage for White, while -100 means the same advantage for Black.
But how do engines calculate this? They don’t just use the standard point values of pieces. Instead, they consider:
- Piece activity – an active rook on an open file can be worth more than a passive rook stuck behind pawns.
- King safety – a checkmate threat can drastically increase the score, even without a material difference.
- Pawn structure – connected, passed, or isolated pawns can change the balance of the game.
This means the engine constantly adjusts the value of each piece depending on the position. For example, a bishop trapped behind pawns may count for less than its normal value of 3 points, while an active knight in the centre can be worth more.
Understanding this helps you see why engines sometimes sacrifice material for better position — they focus on long-term advantages rather than just counting points.
Do chess piece values change in the endgame?
Short answer – yes. Piece values can change significantly in the endgame. As the board empties and kings become active, some pieces become stronger, while others lose their power. Let’s take a look at how the situation changes for each piece:
- Pawns become more valuable. A passed pawn, one that can reach the end of the board without being blocked, can turn into a big threat if it will get promoted to a queen.
- Knights become weaker. With fewer pieces, knights struggle because they rely on complex positions to be effective.
- Bishops often become stronger. In open positions, a bishop can control long diagonals, making it more effective than a knight.
- Rooks gain value. In the endgame, open files make rooks even more powerful, especially when they can work together.
